Archaeologists unearth 2300-year-old necropolis containing at least 17 mummies

Egyptian mummies discovered weird mystery

The University of Cairo has also indicated that it would continue to fund and support archaeological excavations in the site of the new discovery until it becomes a huge tourist attraction.

El-Kholi said the mummies were found in burial shafts along with a collection of eight limestone sarcophagi, two of which were carved in clay.

The mummies have been elaborately preserved and are thought to have been officials and priests.

The discovery surprised many because the ancient burial site on the fringes of the western desert was mainly known as an area where thousands of mummified birds and animals had been discovered over the years.

The team hope the recent discoveries could help revive the country's tourism sector, which was seen hard times since the 2011 uprising.

Salah al-Kholi, a university professor of Egyptology, said: "We found catacombs containing a number of mummies".

A group of Egyptian archaeologists have discovered 17 non-royal mummies in the country's Minya province, the antiquities ministry announced on Saturday, according to AFP.

Attorneys say 8-year-old was bullied before killing himself
At the time, officials at Carson Elementary School told her there was no evidence of bullying and that Gabe has simply fainted. Neither Cincinnati Public Schools officials nor Carson Elementary officials would comment on the video or the assault.

But a spokeswoman said they could also date from the Ptolemaic Dynasty, founded by Alexander the Great's general Ptolemy.

"2017 has been a historic year for archaeological discoveries".

It could herald even more discoveries in the area, he said.

Discoveries such as the mummies, are important to the Egyptian government.

"The more we drill the more we find", Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Khaled Anani told reporters Saturday.

Earlier, Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed several mummies, wooden sarcophagi and more than 1,000 funerary statues in a 3,500-year-old tomb near the city of Luxor. "It is as if our ancestors are sending a message for tourism to come back strongly". No 2016 figure is yet available.
