Conservatives claim there are no more 'no-go areas' in Scotland

Ms Sturgeon said: "Yes, the Tories made gains and had a good performance by their standards - but that support came from Labour not the SNP, so Labour and the Tories are fighting it out for second place while the SNP continues to be comfortably in first place".

Campaign for Socialism spokesman Martyn Cook said: "Labour is being squeezed between two increasingly assertive nationalisms, neither of which is able to deliver for working people".

"Now more than ever before there is a need to send strong voices for Scotland to stop the Tories from doing whatever they like".

Across Scotland, we also know people are looking for somebody to stand up to the SNP.

"And it was in the north-east where the Conservatives - whose tally was up by 12 points across Scotland as a whole, enough to put them five points ahead of Labour - registered their biggest advances".

"SNP win local election in Scotland", declared a press release shortly before 6pm yesterday.

Lesley Laird, Fife Council's former deputy leader, is the party's candidate for the June 8 vote.

Writing in the Scotsman newspaper, he said: "While the party's vote was up on 2012 in much of the West of Scotland, including by eight points in Glasgow, it was sharply down in many of its traditional strongholds in the north-east".

In Kilwinning, Labour leader Joe Cullinane, responsible for passing Scotland's first "no cuts budget", topped the votes in his ward.

At first glance the SNP scored another remarkable success in the Scottish local elections on May 4.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May will order her Conservatives to forget last week's triumph in local elections and to renew their efforts to work "flat out" for "every vote" in Britain's national campaign.

UK Conservatives gain in local elections; Labour, UKIP sink
The party courted controversy during its campaign with suggestions it would ban the burka, a covering worn by some Muslim women. Counting will continue until around midday on Friday with a total of 4,851 council seats were up for grabs in 88 councils.

"We have gained seats in councils all over Scotland today".

Conservative councillors are now the largest grouping in six local authorities. And even those who voted to Leave the European Union should be concerned about the consequences of a hard Brexit that puts winning the votes of Ukip ahead of Scottish jobs.

After the votes were counted the party lost 133 councillors and majority control of four councils.

The SNP is claiming victory in Glasgow despite narrowly failing to take overall control of the city council as Labour was ousted from power after almost 40 years.

Despite the heavy losses, some in the party feared the results could have been even worse.

Labour leader Kezia Dugdale described the results as " obviously a disappointing election". Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, is also visiting his party's three top Scottish target seats.

The local elections brought mixed fortunes for Willie Rennie's party.

She continued: "Last week's election result provides a great springboard for the general election here in Angus".

But, equally, it could be a sign that the party has lost ground. "A vote for any other party simply risks letting the SNP back in, and increases the risk of another unwanted referendum".

Salmond said that after his campaign launch he would be "hitting the doorsteps, pounding the pavements, getting stuck in".
