Mexico sees NAFTA negotiations starting in late August

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said NAFTA is

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said NAFTA is"at best out of date and at worst did not accomplish some of its most important goals

"We welcome Mr. Lighthizer's confirmation because of his grasp of global trade rules and understanding of the importance of balanced trade agreements to the USA dairy sector", said NMPF President and CEO Jim Mulhern.

Lighthizer is about to enter this tense environment to get a trade deal that his boss has promised will bring jobs back to America.

The Senate voted 81-15 to advance Robert Lighthizer's nomination.

However, the USA trade association that represents domestic textile manufacturers has described the new USTR Robert Lighthizer as "the most qualified individual ever to be confirmed to this important post". Lighthizer, 69, once served as a deputy trade representative under President Reagan and has had a long career representing US steel companies pursuing remedies for trade violations by foreign competitors.

"As the Trump Administration's trade policy strategy develops, we want to build upon the USA government's past successes in pushing back against the EU's global GI agenda", said Tom Vilsack, president and CEO of USDEC.

"He's a trade realist", Paul Rosenthal, a trade lawyer at the firm Kelley Drye & Warren.

"Between ambassador Lighthizer and USA department of commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, President Trump has assembled a first-rate team to handle trade and manufacturing matters", Tantillo continued.

Not all Republicans are enthusiastic.

There are certainly some classic free traders in the Senate, particularly among Republicans, but they have largely gone silent as Mr Trump tries to revamp decades of past global policy. Blocking or taxing imports would raise prices of imports for American consumers and provoke retaliation.

The report also added the Trump administration may also move its attention towards the Seoul-Washington free trade agreement in the near future.

Lighthizer won't be the administration's only trade policy heavyweight.

Trump has previously said that he will "rip up" NAFTA, but Gardner reaffirmed his support for the trade deal in an April MSNBC interview. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), who spent the previous eight years in Congress fighting a Democratic White House on trade.

Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 23.30 points or 0.25% at 9,337.35 with 37 components gaining. The MSCI World index, which touched a record high overnight, edged lower.

Lighthizer has more congressional contacts and more experience with the fine points of trade law than Navarro or Ross.

"They always understood that trade policy was merely a tool for building a strong and independent country with a prosperous middle class", he wrote. He served as a senior trade official in the Reagan Administration. Despite Reagan's reputation as a stalwart supporter of free trade, his administration seldom hesitated to pressure US trade partners if it thought American manufacturers were being hurt. He is credited with having Japan introduce a self-imposed ceiling on its steel exports to the United States.

Republicans who still support the multilateral deals of the past are hopeful that Lighthizer's background in the Reagan administration means he will be more thoughtful than some of Trump's Twitter diplomacy on trade.

In 2010 testimony to U.S.

It served as a double hit against Hillary Clinton, who had begun the negotiations on TPP while serving as secretary of state and who was first lady when Bill Clinton cinched the 1993 trade deal with Canada and Mexico.

Trump has lambasted NAFTA and blamed the agreement for the loss of millions of United States manufacturing jobs to Mexico.

Trump campaigned on a promise to renegotiate or withdraw from agreements that he says failed American workers.

"We look forward to working with the new ambassador on the renegotiation of NAFTA and other trade accords to come", Newman said.

Guajardo did not give details of what trip to China in September he was referring to, but the diplomat said it was to the CIFIT summit in Xiamen.

Alan Wolff, a deputy US trade representative in the Carter administration, says China and other USA trading partners should brace themselves.

"Right now, we're in a tough patch, and we're trying to get a trade policy squared away", Roberts said.
