Robert De Niro decries Trump administration's'hostility toward the arts

Robert De Niro had quite a bit to say about the state of the arts under President Donald Trump at Monday night's Film Society of Lincoln Center's Chaplin Award Gala in NY.

De Niro, 73, went on to say that the US President is hampering the arts and making "mean-spirited" cuts to arts programmes "for their own divisive political purposes". "I've got my restaurants for that", he cracked, before adding, "I make them for everybody". "I don't make movies for 'rich liberal elites,' " he said, per the Hollywood Reporter.

'The budget proposal, among its other draconian cuts to life-saving and life-enhancing programs, eliminates the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This is what they now call an alternative fact.

"I've been thinking about this a lot lately with our current government's hostility towards the arts", said De Niro.

Krueger said: "We are just out of the January transfer window and are striving to keep this group together and to build on it". The rumours suggest that Chelsea are the favourites to capture van Dijk, who would command a few of around £50million.

De Niro's speech was met with applause by the crowd at the event which also saw tributes from Streep - a former recipient of the award - Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Penn, Harvey Keitel and Ben Stiller.

De Niro has been an outspoken critic of Trump ever since he announced he was running for president.

Stiller, who starred alongside De Niro in "Meet the Parents", said he was "intimidated" by the Oscar-winning honoree.

"God knows if you're going to honor somebody it should be Bobby", said Douglas. I like Johnny Boy from 'Mean Streets.' I was a big fan early on.

The actor even said he wanted to punch then-candidate Trump in October - a threat he repeated in February. He appeared to soften his tone in an interview with ITK just weeks after Trump's November White House win, saying at the time, "I would only say that we're all hoping, waiting and hoping, that [Trump] will lead the country in a way that'll benefit everyone and benefit our neighbors around the world". But what he did, and what I do are two very different things, totally, of course.
