Marion Maréchal-Le Pen 'to quit politics'

Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, niece of National Front leader and defeated presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, will not stand for reelection to the French parliament, Le Figaro reported Tuesday. She is one of two lawmakers in the outgoing lower house of parliament affiliated with the party. She added that she had told her aunt, who understood, respecting the choice because she - that is, Marine - knows how hard political life can be. "At 27 (year old) it is time for me to leave it for some time", Marechal-Le Pen was quoted as saying in the paper.

"I do not give up for ever on this political battle", she added.

On several occasions, Marechal-Le Pen found herself in political conflicts with her aunt and in disagreement with the policies of her party.

Other differences between the two include their relationship with the party founder and funder of this year's presidential campaign, Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Marechal-Le Pen is regarded as more traditional and conservative than Marine Le Pen. "It risks leaving a number of people orphan, and could trigger some fighting among those would like to take over from her at the head of the ultra-conservative faction of the FN".

He said: "This will create a huge disappointment". Senior party official Bruno Gollnisch told reporters it was on the cards. "Certainly, this is an interesting stake for the future, for parliamentary elections", the expert said.
