China's Tencent 'deeply sorry' for Russia WeChat block

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) blacklisted wechat.com, the website of the most popular Chinese messenger.

Russia's telecoms watchdog has blocked China's WeChat, the popular social media app developed by Tencent Holdings, the South China Morning Post said on Saturday, citing information posted on the Russian regulator's website.

Some Twitter users have reacted to Russia's latest move on online censorship by comparing WeChat's obstruction to that of multiple foreign internet services that are blocked in China.

"We're experiencing a block and we're deeply sorry", a company official said on a Tencent microblog.

Russia's telecom watchdog announced earlier this week that WeChat is not in compliance with Russia's information laws.

On Tuesday, Roskomnadzor also blocked Messenger, Line and Vchat for the same reason.

Hulu Live TV service launches with 50 channels for $40 monthly
While it offers the same number of viewer profiles as YouTube TV , Hulu's service is subpar in the other two ways. Technical snafus have plagued many streaming TV packages in the early days, including Sling TV and DirecTV Now.

Last year, Russia blocked United States social networking site LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, for violating a law that requires data on Russian citizens to be stored on Russian servers.

Russian Federation is trying to copy China's approach in internet censorship, according to a recent article by Emily Parker, a fellow at New America, a non-profit think tank.

A Roskomnadzor spokesman stated Friday the block was due to WeChat's violation of Article 15.4 of the law on information, technologies and security.

It is owned by China's IT giant Tencent, the report said.

The article stipulates sanctions for failure to discharge various responsibilities of organisers of information distribution on the Internet, the Hong Kong based daily said.
