Canadian government threatens trade action against US for softwood duties

President Donald Trump stoked trade tensions last week by slapping duties on softwood lumber imports from Canada, reigniting a dispute that dates backs decades, while threatening to take actions against Canadian dairy over what the USA says are unfair subsidies.

OR is the home state of Democrat Sen. He sent a letter to the premier of B.C., announcing he was seriously considering banning US coal exports from that province and that trade experts were studying it.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross yesterday said that threats of retaliatory trade actions from Canadian officials "are inappropriate" and will not influence final US import duty determinations on Canadian softwood lumber.

The government is also considering imposing duties or other trade action on several or industries, the BBC has learnt.

British Columbia is a major lumber exporter and says the duties will devastate its industry.

The Canadian government has found several OR business-assistance programs it says may constitute illegal subsidies.

The federal government has begun studying all business subsidies in that state, home to Democratic Sen.

But the Canadian government disputes those charges and is investigating several OR industries that may be receiving US subsidies, including the plywood, flooring, wood chips and wine sectors, CTV News reported. "We hope this dispute can be resolved". It involves a request to the Canada Border Services Agency to study illegal subsidies in OR, a process that would take several months.

"It's a real thing". Ron Wyden, who has been an ardent supporter of the Canadian softwood tariffs.

Another official said there's no intention of changing the low-drama, co-operative posture Trudeau has taken toward the White House: "This is not about the president".

"(But) we still have to respond to these issues as they come".
