Meanwhile, Theresa May's hopes of a General Election victory on June 8 have been boosted after local contests showed Labour suffering losses and the UKIP vote collapsing.

Mr McDonnell said that Labour had suffered a "tough" night as it struggled in some of its Welsh heartlands and failed to resist Tory advances in England.

The Liberal Democrats were having a mixed election, failing to breakthrough against the Tories in the south-west England battleground.

Labour tried to play down the significance of a bruising set of results which saw it forfeit nearly 300 council seats, lose control of Glasgow for the first time in around 40 years and suffer reverses in Welsh strongholds.

Things could get worse for Labour when counting begins in Scotland, with experts forecasting heavy losses for Jeremy Corbyn's party.

She said: "We are out there to win".

In Scotland, which since the late 1990s has largely shunned the governing party, early results showed the Conservatives gaining to the detriment of both Labour and, to a lesser extent, the Scottish National Party, which still looked likely to win the lion's share of votes overall. Other losses included eight seats in Hampshire and six seats in Essex.

"I won't use the word "disaster", I'll use the word "challenging", she told the BBC.

But the Prime Minister sought to fight any complacency in Tory ranks, insisting that she was "taking nothing for granted" in an election which she hopes will strengthen her hand in Brexit negotiations with Brussels.

In a statement on Friday morning, Nuttall admitted it had been a "difficult night" as there was nothing the party could do "in the face of a big national swing to the Tories".

While local issues are usually the main influence in such polls, May's decision last month to call an early general election ensured her own record and Brexit would be on voters' minds.

The Conservatives have made gains while nearly all the other parties have lost ground.

The party held overall control of several Welsh cities considered potential toss-ups, but with 19 of 88 councils voting, the Conservative party had added 113 councillors to a total count of 441 seats.

It never gained more than one MP in the United Kingdom parliament, but the former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron was so anxious about the prospect of losing support from voters skeptical of the European Union in the 2015 general election that he promised the in-out referendum. "What we have to do is make this election about more than leadership, we've got to make it about the future of our country".

The Conservatives have won the most seats on Nottinghamshire County Council - but fell short of gaining a controlling majority in a dramatically close local election.
