An FBI employee, who was assigned to investigate a German member of the Daesh (ISIL) terror group, instead fled to Syria to marry him, according to a new report that exposes an embarrassing failure on part of America's intelligence community.

Before travelling to Syria, 38-year-old woman translator lied to the FBI about where she was going and warned her new husband he was under investigation, according to federal court records. Cuspert reportedly threatened former President Barack Obama and held a severed head in an Islamic State video.

Greene Wednesday Denis Cuspert, a German citizen and rapper who allegedly recruited supporters of the Islamic State online, unsealed court documents show.

In August, Greene was somehow able to get out of Syria and return back to the U.S., where she was arrested under offence of national threat and was grilled for hours to extract information about her second husband and their activities in Syria. In an email to an unidentified person she wrote: "I am gone and I can't come back".

Later that month, Greene acknowledged that she would "probably go to prison for a long time if I come back, but that is life".

She was immediately arrested upon returning to the USA, at which point she served two years in prison and was released the summer of 2016.

CNN, which first reported Green's case, said it had been able to confirm with a source close to the investigation that the ISIS fighter Greene married was, in fact, Cuspert, a German national who previously performed as Deso Dogg and once toured with DMX. She is now described as a "former employee" of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She was a translator assigned to his case at the FBI's Detroit field office.

Chris Soules Bought Booze Before Accident ... According to Prosecutors
The former "Dancing With The Stars" alum was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that results in death. "Ultimately, Mr. Elite Daily reached out to a representative for Soules on the allegation, but did not hear back at the time of publication.

At the time of her departure, she was married to a United States soldier. Even after her case became a matter of public record, still silence. She was released from prison last summer, CNN reported.

On the other hand, Greene told the press that if she talks to the press her family will be in danger.

But in a twist that mirrors the plot of the USA television series Homeland, in which a Central Intelligence Agency operative played by Claire Danes falls in love with a soldier-turned-jihadist played by Damian Lewis, the two became close and Cuspert convinced Greene to join him in Syria. As several friends and acquaintances recalled, she married a US soldier at a young age and moved to the United States.

By the time an arrest warrant was issued by US authorities, Greene had somehow returned to the USA, where she was then apprehended.

US officials called her behavior "egregious", deserving of "severe punishment", but her cooperation earned her a two-year prison sentence. Nine months later they said their assessment of the strike was wrong and that Cuspert had survived.

CNN spoke to Greene's professor who taught her while she was getting her master's degree in history from Clemson.

The FBI said Greene's case forced them to take steps to "identify and reduce security vulnerabilities".
