Navalny, 40, was among the leaders of large antigovernment protests in 2011-2012 and has riled the Kremlin with detailed reports alleging deep-seated corruption among officials close to Putin.

The retrial came after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled in February 2016 that the outcome of the 2013 trial, when exactly the same verdicts and sentences were handed to Navalny and Ofitserov, violated the defendants' right to a fair trial.

The ruling by a court in Kirov relates to Mr Navalny's conviction for embezzlement for a timber deal.

Navalny announced late a year ago he intends to run in the March 2018 presidential election.

"Navalny's presidential campaign does not depend on the Kirovles case verdict, it never depended on it", the Mediazone publication cites Leonid Volkov, head of Navalny's election staff. He was attacked last week by an assailant who threw green dye on his face, leaving Navalny with only 20 percent vision in his right eye and a risk of losing use of it completely.

Prosecutors sought Navalny and Ofitserov be sentenced to five and four years on probation.

Also, Parliament sessions will have to be reworked, along with changes in data collection and working of state governments. It will also ease in doing business with investors and multinationals who follow the calendar year as financial year.

On February 8, Navalny was convicted of organizing embezzlement of 16 million rubles ($280,000) at the Kirovles timber company for the second time and received a 5-year suspended sentence, while another defendant in the case, Pyotr Ofitserov, received a 4-year suspended sentence.

Navalny has said he believes he is eligible to run because he is not imprisoned. But he said he was unable to get treatment in a specialised clinic in Switzerland or Spain because of a foreign travel ban imposed over what he says is a politically-motivated embezzlement conviction.

An opinion poll published by the Levada Center on Tuesday, based on the views of 1,600 people across the country showed 48% would vote for Putin if the election was held now against just 1% who said they would vote for Navalny. "I'm being actively treated and there's hope I will be healed".

Navalny and his supporters often stressed that the case is political, but representatives of the Russian government deny this.

Authorities have so far not opened an investigation into the attack.

"No one said it would be easy".
