Google fiercely competes with rival Facebook in the mobile advertising space, and the two firms are said to account for 99 percent of the industry growth in digital advertising in 2016.

YouTube had come under fire for ads appearing alongside videos carrying homophobic or anti-Semitic messages, prompting a number of companies to suspend their digital ads on the video service. Its paid clicks meanwhile grew 44 percent year-over-year in the first quarter.

While Wall Street was expecting earnings of $7.40 per share on revenue of $24.2 billion, Alphabet posted earnings of $7.73 per share on revenue of $24.8 billion, a 22 percent jump from the same period past year.

"YouTube revenues continue to grow at a significant rate, driven primarily by video advertising", Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said during an earnings call.

In a conference call with analysts to discuss the results, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said mobile continues to drive momentum behind the company's advertising business.
