Erdogan says Turkey retaliating against 'serious' mortar fire on Syria border

US forces take up positions on the outskirts of the Syrian town, Manbij, a flashpoint between Turkish troops and allied Syrian fighters and USA -backed Kurdish fighters, in al-Asaliyah village, Aleppo province, Syria, on March 7.

As clashes continue between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey and Kurdish militant group the People's Protection Unit, U.S. forces are patrolling the border region in an operation reminiscent of the "reassure and deter mission" launched in Syria in March.

On Wednesday, Turkey carried out several air strikes in Syria and Iraq against separatist Kurdish rebels and their allies, drawing the wrath of USA officials who accused Ankara of lacklustre coordination.

Rockets fired from an area in Syria controlled by the Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) targeted a Turkish army command post in the Ceylanpinar district of Turkey's southern Sanliurfa province. Before the event, Mr. Trump signed two more executive orders on trade, as he continued to follow through on his tough talk from before and after the election, vowing to do more to protect U.S.jobs at home from what he says are unfair practices by Canada, Mexico, and other nations.

But the USA is concerned that Turkey's military operations in Syria are more focused on preventing Syrian Kurds from forming an autonomous region in northern Syria, along Turkey's border, which could embolden Turkey's own Kurdish minority.

Since Trump's election, Turkey had indicated it wanted a "change in U.S. policy on the YPG support".

The Coalition also called on both Turks and Kurds to "remain focused on the fight to defeat ISIS, which is the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace and security".

The area, which includes Arbin, has been held under siege by government forces for more than three years.

A member of U.S forces rides on a military vehicle in the town of Darbasiya next to the Turkish border, Syria April 28, 2017.

Pictures posted by pro-Kurdish activists on Twitter show military convoys flying USA and YPG flags passing through the mostly Kurdish-controlled city of Qamishli.

"With the U.S. -Kurdish pact consolidating, not weakening, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has reverted to claiming that the burgeoning alliance could end up empowering a Kurdish push for autonomy, and stoke the fires of insurgency inside Turkey's own borders".

Erdogan's comments come ahead of a meeting with President Donald Trump on May 16 in the United States.

"Better they live in fear than we have worries", he said. Seventy people were killed, they said. There, they found documents shedding light on the ISIS oil trade, jihadist passports with Turkish entry stamps, an instruction booklet - printed in Turkey - on how to wage war against the Syrian government, and more.

A YPG commander said on Friday that USA forces would begin monitoring the situation along the Syria-Turkey frontier, according to Reuters.

The escalation of force between Ankara and the YPG could complicate the operation to liberate Raqqa, the ISIS capital in Syria.

Khalil said his forces were not building up in the area.

Erdogan said Sunday his country may take further action against Kurdish militants in Iraq and Syria, as US-backed forces in Syria closed in on the last neighborhoods of a former ISIS stronghold. It is just one of the Turkish government's bold moves since the election win.

Turkey has banned popular matchmaking shows, "In radio and television broadcasting services, such programs in which people are introduced with the objective of finding a friend or searching for a spouse... can not be permitted,"says a statement in Turkey's Official Gazette, which publishes new legislation".

Turkey had warned Wikipedia to remove the content, but the nonprofit encyclopedia refused.

The dating show ban comes on the same day as Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) said it was blocking Wikipedia with an administrative order.

Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports Wikipedia, said it was actively working to seek a judicial review of the decision.

It said that Turkey had pressed ahead with the air strikes despite United States objections and this "should serve as a warning for what could lie in store".

It has blocked social media in the past, such as Twitter and YouTube, and the Committee to Protect Journalists regards the country as "the world's worst jailer of journalists".

On Saturday alone, almost 4,000 civil employees were fired, according to a decree announced on a government website.

The plan, put forward by the ruling Justice and Development Party, gives Erdogan sweeping and largely unchecked powers. Erdogan, won those concessions in a referendum in mid- April.
