While Ossoff got support from his party's chairman, Handel gathered her own big name support, picking up an endorsement from Gov. Nathan Deal.

Democrats put their hope in political upstart Jon Ossoff to deliver a rebuke to President Trump in Tuesday night's Georgia congressional election.

Democrat Jon Ossoff, 30, nearly turned a GOP stronghold blue Tuesday night in a special election to see who will take over Georgia's 6th Congressional District, CBS News reports.

Tuesday's balloting in Georgia's 6th Congressional District didn't produce a victor, but Democratic upstart Jon Ossoff - seeking to replace Republican Tom Price, who was tapped by President Donald Trump for health and human services secretary - led all candidates with 48.1 percent of the vote.

An Ossoff victory, which almost came to pass despite the long Republican tradition in the district, would have sent even marginally vulnerable House Republicans into a panic that the unpopularity of President Donald Trump could bring them down next November. "‶We defied the odds, shattered expectations, and now are ready to fight on and win in June".

Elections rules stipulate that a candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to win the race. The district is a longtime Republican stronghold-a Democrat hasn't represented Georgia's 6th since before the current leading democratic candidate was born. Besides Ossoff, no Democrat appeared to have exceeded 500 votes. But Trump, his political brand at stake, painted an opposing picture.

"It's a test case for how far a Democratic candidate can go in a Republican district on the strength of opposition to Trump", said Todd Rehm, a Georgia Republican strategist who is not affiliated with any candidate in the race.

Ossoff benefited from a fractured Republican field of 11 candidates, some of whom emphasized their loyalty to Trump while others kept their distance.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump would campaign in Georgia for Handel "if needed" but dismissed the race as overhyped. "They came up short".

Murray loses to Thiem in Barcelona Open semifinals
Just as in Friday's grueling quarter-final with Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Murray got off to a bad start. Nadal's only scare was in the fourth game of the second set when he survived two break points.

Spicer left open the possibility that Trump campaigns in Georgia ahead of the run-off.

The documentary filmmaker withstood attacks from President Donald Trump to poll 48.3 per cent of the vote (with 88 per cent of the vote counted).

"I'd rather be Jon Ossoff than Karen Handel right now", Tom Perez, the Democratic National Committee chairman, told CNN. "The progressive energy out there is palpable and the volunteers are out there".

Sanders was then asked if Ossoff is a progressive.

"The reason is clear: voters are rejecting Trump and his policies".

But Democratic Party supporters were fired up, said University of Georgia professor Charles S. Bullock.

Republicans avoided embarrassment last week when they narrowly held a conservative Kansas seat vacated when Trump tapped Republican Representative Mike Pompeo to head the Central Intelligence Agency.

However, what is concerning is that why do Congressional Republicans perceive Ossoff as a threat and why did Trump want him to lose so badly?

Levell, who worked on Trump's campaign, got less than 1% of the vote.
