Suspended Alabama chief justice to announce future plans

Gov. Kay Ivey has appointed Associate Justice Lyn Stuart to lead the Alabama Supreme Court as chief justice.

After the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of equal marriage back in 2015, Alabama's Chief Justice Roy Moore tried to actively disregard the rulings - issuing a number of spurious judicial orders to officials in a brazen attempt to re-ban gay weddings.

Moore said a key to making that happen is making sure the federal government stays within constitutional bounds.

Following complaints, the Judicial Inquiry Commission filed charges against Moore last May, leading to his automatic suspension from the bench.

Stuart received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Auburn University in 1977, and her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Alabama in 1980. In 2012, though, after a brief feint toward a Republican presidential run, he made a triumphal return to the state Supreme Court, being elected chief justice again. Sue Bell Cobb was the first to hold the office in 2007.

Following the announcement of the new dates, unusual released a statement verifying his own candidacy for the seat, saying he's "ready to run whether the election is next month or next year".

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. to retire at end of season
He also as two championships in NASCAR's second-tier series, now called the NASCAR XFINITY Series, in 1998 and 1999. Earnhardt's best finish in eight starts this season was fifth place on April 9 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Eva Kendrick, state director of the Human Rights Campaign Alabama, a gay rights organization, said Moore is seeking "to capitalize on the name recognition he gained for harming LGBTQ people in our state". In addition to the incumbent, Strange, state Rep. Ed Henry, an early supporter of President Trump's campaign, and Randy Brinson, a former chairman of Christian Coalition of Alabama, have also announced plans to run. But before he left office the septuagenarian "Love Gov" had the opportunity to appoint a temporary U.S. Senate replacement for new U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Stuart raised $1.2 million in her 2000 race for the Supreme Court, much of it coming from business groups. The foundations of the fabric of our country are being shaken tremendously. "Our families are being crippled by divorce and abortion", Moore said.

A judicial discipline panel suspended Moore after ruling that he urged probate judges to refuse marriage licenses to gay couples. On Sept. 30, the Court of the Judiciary suspended Moore for the rest of his term. "Our sacred institution has being destroyed by the Supreme Court".

He has based his career on far-right positions and outrageous statements about LGBT people.

According to the Montgomery Advertiser, in an announcement speech on Wednesday Moore sounded familiar "themes of social conservatism and originalism" and pledged support for President Donald Trump, saying "Before we can make America great again, we've got to make America good".

Age restrictions prevent Moore from being reelected to the Alabama Supreme Court.
