Caleb Brantley could get cut before ever getting to Cleveland

NFL Draft: Browns take Florida DL Caleb Brantley in 6th round despite him facing battery charge

Brantley, who left the Florida Gators to enter the 2017 NFL Draft and forgo a senior season of eligibility, was selected in the sixth round of the Draft by the Cleveland Browns with the 185th overall pick.

Former Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley was expected to be a second-round pick in this year's draft. But the team will take a PR hit for this selection.

The police report from the incident notes that Brantley's "use of force was clearly out of retaliation and not self-defense" and that the woman needed dental work to fix a displaced tooth as a result.

"We will continue to investigate on our end, and provided that we can get comfortable, keep him on the roster".

Brown, in comments to reporters after his team drafted Brantley on Saturday, says Cleveland has told the player it may release him pending results of the case. "If we can't, we'll move on", Brown said.

The Browns deeply researched the matter and personally visited with Brantley before making the pick, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Unfortunately, Brantley was charged with battery last week for allegedly knocking a woman unconscious. The police report said Brantley's "use of force was clearly out of retaliation and not self-defense".

Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, who lives in Gainesville, reported the bar's security guard said Brantley did not throw a punch and that the woman was not unconscious. While his inconsistency is something that gives evaluators pause, Brantley has an explosive skill-set to create interior disruption and develop into the type of defender that offenses must account for on each snap - ascending three-technique with his best football ahead of him, but the motor issues could cause him to go lower than his NFL ceiling deserves.

Brantley is the third defensive linemen the Browns have drafted thus far and fourth defensive player.
