North Korea: Trump's airstrikes in Syria justify its nuclear weapons program

Trump to make China state visit, says top US diplomat

Chinese intelligence services have a sophisticated understanding of US actions, Mr. Park said, and would be able to distinguish between Mr. Trump's response to an attack against Syrian civilians using the banned nerve agent sarin and what the USA leader might do if threatened by some action by North Korea, which has been regularly test-firing ballistic missiles toward Japan.

The summit was also watched closely as to whether the U.S. stands up to China for bullying South Korea for hosting the U.S. THAAD missile defense system created to defend better against ever-growing missile threats from North Korea.

In a possible harbinger of the kind of punishments Washington could inflict, a leading Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, was fined almost USD900 million in March for shipping sensitive USA -made technology to Iran in violation of US sanctions.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said China was interested in reducing its trade surplus with the US as a way to control its own inflation. The report did not name the official, which is common in KCNA reports.

His comments come after Trump vowed to "solve North Korea" by himself amid fears the communist state has missiles that can reach the US. Whether it will be enough to move China towards denuclearizing the NoKo's remains to be seen. He also noted the importance of protecting human rights, and asked China to adhere to global norms in the seas of East Asia, Tillerson said.

At the U.N., Haley charged that Russia either "knowingly" allowed chemical weapons to stay in Syria and is "incompetent", or that Assad has been "playing the Russians for fools".

"We will be announcing additional sanctions on Syria as part of our ongoing effort to stop this type of activity and emphasize how significant we view this", Mnuchin said. He did not elaborate.

The UN Security Council - where both China and the United States hold a veto - is holding crisis talks to discuss a response to Bashar al-Assad's Syrian regime.

Xi said his first meeting with the U.S. leader bears unique importance to the development of China-U.S. ties.

While Xi "expressed understanding" of the attack, "because it was punishment for a chemical attack that had killed children", the Times reported the Chinese analysts were mostly "scornful".

"The two sides agreed to undertake an ambitious agenda and meeting schedule to show progress and demonstrate meaningful results", he said.

Mallya's arrest not a feather in cap of Centre: Congress
Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar said the government would do everything in its power to bring Mallya to justice. Surjewala said the government's sincerity of goal would be proved only when Mallya and Modi are brought back to India.

They remarked generally about "progress" in their relationship and optimism about the future.

"If they manage to strike up a good personal relationship, it will be the first step to good US-China relations under the Trump administration", he added.

"The relationship developed by President Xi and myself, I think, is outstanding, " Trump said Friday during a meeting between the two countries' delegations.

"And I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away", he added.

"Given the range of issues and the magnitude, that may be ambitious, but it's a very big sea change in the pace of discussion", Mr Ross told reporters. And much of the responsibility for seeding this "strategic distrust" in the region must go to the US.

Xi said China is pushing forward the supply-side structural reform, boosting domestic demand and increasing the share of the services industry in its national economy.

Meanwhile, in a posting on its website on Saturday, China's foreign ministry said the countries had agreed to "properly" deal with issues of trade friction. The White House said in a statement that he "noted the challenges caused by Chinese government intervention in its economy and raised serious concerns about the impact of China's industrial, agricultural, technology, and cyber policies on United States jobs and exports".

Behind closed doors Trump's grandson and granddaughter sang a traditional Chinese ballad - "Jasmine Flower" - and recited poetry for their honored guests, according to Chinese state media.

"Clearly, both leaders want this summit to succeed and be seen as a success", Prof Shi Yinhong, who heads the Centre for American Studies at Beijing's Renmin University, told The Straits Times.

As for the USA trade deficit with China, another focus of the summit, the two leaders agreed to a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at reducing the deficit, but they failed to give specifics.

JOHN YANG: Last week, the president signed a pair of executive orders aimed at combating foreign trade abuses, but he has yet to carry out his campaign promise to formally label China a currency manipulator.
