The 2001 Long Beach Grand Prix victor had the top lap time of 1:06.2254 the brake his own qualifying record of 1:06.6294 set in 2015.
Simon Pagenaud (22) holds off Scott Dixon (9) to take the checkered flag to win the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Sunday April 17, 2016 in Long Beach, Cailf.
"If it rains, it's going to take away all that grip on the race track, so then whatever happened today is back to zero", Pagenaud said.
James Hinchcliffe was second on Dancing with the Stars last fall.
"We've qualified very well the first two races so hopefully we can convert that into a win really soon". It was also Hinchliffe's first victory since he survived a near fatal crash during a practice run at the Indianapolis 500 in 2015.
Hinchcliffe's life was saved almost two years ago by the at-track safety crew that smartly pinched off the blood flow and raced him into surgery.
"I guess I remembered how to drive; and I guess this team remembered how to do it", Johnson said. Champ Car (2004), IRL (2008) and finally Indy Car (2011) followed with 2017 being the 34 Indy car race at Long Beach.
"After Indy and personally me for Toronto, this is the biggest one to win", Hinchcliffe said.
Senate confirms Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court
But despite the opposition to Gorsuch, his confirmation was never seriously in doubt and he flew remarkably under the radar. The Senate's 52 Republicans threatened to use the nuclear option to break the filibuster and did so on Thursday.
"I love what I do, I love IndyCar, I have a lot of fire in the tank just like Tom Brady", Castroneves said. "I made a mess of it a couple of times, but definitely it's a place I really enjoy".
"It is great to get my first podium for the Captain (Roger Penske) and now our next step is a win", said Newgarden. "We got the pole at one (Indy), a podium at the other and now we win the third". Hinchcliffe finished ninth in last month's season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg which Bourdais won. The Team Penske driver finished third last year, and second the year before.
Kiwi Scott Dixon placed fourth and defending race victor Simon Pagenaud rounded out the top five. Marco Andretti (Honda) needs a win desperately and Andrettis of various decades have won here a total of six times; perhaps this Andretti will join Mario and Michael. "You never know. So that's what I like; they keep mixing it up, and that gives me an opportunity to be back in victory circle". Those 26 include the 21 full-time drivers, plus Juan Pablo Montoya, Pippa Mann, Sage Karam, Oriol Servia, a first-time entry for Juncos Racing (possibly two) and a third vehicle at Foyt which Zach Veach would drive.
"We just had to make sure the reds were going to hang on. Other than that, a strong weekend and the vehicle has been good since we rolled off [the truck] Friday". "You know, if he can get rewarded for his commitment to the series, it's awesome".
Bourdais wasn't able to overtake Hinchcliffe on a Lap 82 restart, but the runner-up result showed the perseverance of everyone on the team. "I have always wanted to be on top here". "We lost balance a little bit, and I was really thinking about saving second place". "I think I raced here for maybe 12 or 14 years before I got my first victory here". JR Hildebrand broke a bone in his left hand during an incident on the final lap. He's not cleared for IndyCar competition at this time.
"I was making a move on Mikhail Aleshin and I could tell he was struggling", Hildebrand said. Then came contender Alexander Rossi, who suffered an obvious engine failure on his No. 98 on lap 62 from inside the top 5.
Defending series champion Simon Pagenaud won here last year while Sebastien Bourdais and Will Power are the only drivers in this year's field with multiple wins. "The pace of the vehicle was really good all day and we were able to recover from a little bit of a tricky pit stop sequence on the first stop, so it's unfortunate because the NAPA Auto Parts vehicle was awesome". Where do we stand to this day?
