The Kansas City Royals will play their home opener with heavy hearts as a ceremony honoring the late Yordano Ventura will precede their contest against the Oakland Athletics on Monday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The A's are at Kauffman Stadium for what will be an emotional home openerfor the Royals on Monday. But you know, it just takes time.

Ventura passed away this January in a vehicle wreck in the Dominican Republic.

Kelvin Herrera hitched up his trousers and tucked in his crisp, white jersey inside the Kansas City clubhouse, the space beside him empty but for a framed jersey and memories to last a lifetime. The Royals will look to overcome their emotions and bounce back from a 5-4, 12-inning loss at Houston on Sunday that concluded their season-opening 2-4 road trip. This time around, though, it was a somber atmosphere to start the game.

Cotton, acquired in the Rich Hill/Josh Reddick deal with the Dodgers at the trade deadline a year ago, shut down the Royals with just two hits over seven innings in front of an Opening Day Kauffman Stadium crowd that wanted to be fired up but never got the chance.

North Korea test-fires missile ahead of Trump's meeting with Chinese leader
North Korea fired an apparent ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, South Korea's military said early Wednesday. The 60 kilometers is a relatively short flight compared with the distances that other North Korean missiles flew.

Davis, the only A's player to reach base safely in the first eight games, has four home runs after hitting none in spring training. The A's seven-game win streak against Kansas City matches the longest in franchise history.

In matching his career high in innings pitched, the 25-year-old right-hander changed speeds, hit the corners and kept the ball at the knees and away from the power of the Royals bats. Left-hander Sean Doolittle worked the ninth for his first save.

Oakland RHP Sonny Gray (right lat injury) threw a bullpen session Monday and will throw to hitters Thursday, manager Bob Melvin said.

Kennedy also lost his season debut, a 9-1 defeat at Minnesota on Wednesday in which he yielded three runs on three hits and five walks in five innings. Kansas City are 2-7 in their last 9 overall and Kansas City are 2-7 in their last 9 games on grass while the over is 14-5-1 in Kansas City last 20 home games.
