More than a dozen police cars were seen outside the Shops at Merrick Park, an upscale shopping mall not far from the University of Miami.

The crowded patio at Yard House, a nearby sports bar, emptied when the shooting began, the Herald reported. General manager Tim Hartog said patrons ran inside and hid under tables while others rushed out the back door before police placed the restaurant on lockdown.

Police said the area was secure about 40 minutes later, the station reported. However, Miami-Dade Police will now take over the investigation.
