Today is World Health Day (April 7), which this year is focussed on the World Health Organization's (WHO) year-long global campaign - "Depression: Let's talk" - which aims to raise awareness of depression across the world, and increase the number of sufferers who seek and attain help. The day celebrated with a prescribed theme and World Health Day 2017 Theme announced as Depression: Let's Talk.

In his message, the governor said that depression was an illness that could happen to people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all the countries.

Though depression is the leading cause of suicide, which is, in turn, the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year olds, specialists argue that not all symptoms of depression can be diagnosed as depressive disorders. Treatment usually involves either a talking therapy or antidepressant medication or a combination of the two.

The CDC says depression is characterized by persistent sadness and sometimes irritability.

She therefore reiterated the urgent need to prevent and treat those affected by this serious and complex mental health condition, adding that those affected faced significant stigma and fear of isolation which prevented them from seeking help.

India has the highest suicide rate among 10 South-East Asian countries and depression is one of the leading causes.

The survey published yesterday revealed 613,000 people are living with depression, accounting for 1.5 percent of the total population.

Carter Page Russia Spy Meeting: 3 key takeaways on former Trump adviser
Page was quickly cut from the Trump team following reports that federal investigators were probing his ties to Russian officials. The FBI was unable to arrest Mr Podobnyy and Mr Sporyshev as they had left the United States by the time the trio were indicted.

The theme "Depression: Let us Talk" recognises that depression is a treatable condition and seeks to address the fact that, despite this, about 50% of cases of major depression still go untreated.

At least 322 million people worldwide experience depression, with almost 800,000 people dying by suicide each year.

The panel discussion held during a seminar organised by the CIHSR to commemorate World Health Day on April 7. In this stress-filled era some globalization dimensions, which are of highly competitive if not throat-cutting, depression has risen to the top as one of the main causes of ill health.

"Depression, unlike physical illnesses, requires much more than medical support - like support of family, friends, and motivation to get well by talking about it", Prashant Goyal, Consultant Psychiatrist at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute in New Delhi, added.

Discussing depressive disorders and other mental disorders can help in identifying, managing and treating the problem at an early stage.

He said mental health disorders impose an enormous disease burden in societies globally.

So we are beginning to find ways to help people make it easier to acknowledge their depression and to learn more about what depression looks like and how it can be treated. The best way to save an individual from the grasp of depression is to allow them to vent their feelings and teaching them how to move on from their past mistakes.
