Pravin Gordhan was seen by foreign investors (and many South Africans) as the only guarantee that Zuma would not turn the country into a feeding trough for his associates. Other ANC members in military uniforms who had been posted outside their party headquarters helped to escort the protesters to safety.
"We will protect President Jacob Zuma, protect the staff of the ANC and the leadership collective of the ANC, especially now that they are preparing for the June policy conference", Maphatsoe said.
He urged South Africans to come out in their numbers to join the march irrespective of their political affiliations.
Ratings agency S&P Global also cited Gordhan's exit as a major factor in its decision to downgrade South Africa's credit rating on Monday, making it harder and more expensive for the country to borrow money on worldwide markets.
- Democratic Alliance (@Our_DA) April 5, 2017Tomorrow SAns will take to the streets to raise their voices against the ANC, Zuma & their mismanagement of the country. The South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Workers and Socialist Party (WASP) are also joining the march. SpiceJet cancels Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad's ticket
Sawant further said that the party never supported Gaikwad's actions but always demanded a proper investigation into the matter. After Air India refused to allow Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad on any of their flights, the MP is adamant on proving a point.
"Instead of chasing criminals we have many agencies chasing up and trying to criminalise honest people", he said, speaking in Cape Town at a memorial service for anti-apartheid stalwart Ahmed Kathrada.
Social justice activist Mark Heywood said the march would be peaceful and legal.
Mantashe denied that Gordhan was sacked exclusively because of an intelligence report that accused him and Jonas of plotting with banks in London to undermine the South African economy, saying it was not the only reason for Gordhan's removal. "We are serious about this", said Maimane.
Citizens across South Africa came out in their tens of thousands on Friday to call for President Jacob Zuma to be removed from office.
Themba Masango, national convener of the #SaveSouthAfrica campaign, said the core message of the People's March was "Zuma must go, and must go immediately". Why dismiss him now, only two years before Zuma must retire at the end of his second term? About 4,000 people were also marching in coastal city of Durban, the main city in the KwaZulu Natal province, an ANC stronghold. In Cape Town, motorcyclists with South African flags led a rally.
To ANC MPs, Mpofu asked: "Somebody who has defied the deputy president, who has defied the Treasurer-General and forced them to make public statements - if you are voting for Zuma when we put the motion, who are you actually voting for?"
