McGinnis began his basketball journey at Washington High School and was named Mr. Basketball in 1969. McGinnis, who perhaps authored the greatest single season individual effort in the history of the program, wore the Cream and Crimson during the 1970-71 season. He averaged more than 24 points in all seven of those seasons and delivered a virtuoso showing in the 2002-03 campaign, going for 32.1 points per night with the Magic.
He is one of four players to have their jersey number retired by the Pacers. We could not be more thrilled for "Big George' to receive this most prestigious honor". After playing a year at IU, McGinnis joined the Pacers where he played a big role in the team winning the 1972 and 1973. With the Pacers he was named the 1975 Co-MVP with future teammate Julius Erving. Since 1998, only two of Self's teams have not won a regular-season conference championship. He played with six teams, averaging 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game during his career.
