Indiana hires Archie Miller as new coach

As he spoke about how he would make Hoosiers fans delighted he had been hired to coach their favorite basketball team, many unsurprising themes were woven into the presentation: toughness, outworking the opposition and, above all, putting the IN back IN IN basketball.

Indiana University announced Saturday that Archie Miller has been named the new head men's basketball coach.

IN held an open press conference on Monday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall to introduce their new head coach. According to reports from ESPN and The Vertical, Miller's contract is for seven years.

As Glass introduced Miller for the first time, he turned to his new coach and said, "I've got to say, Archie, after observing your first team meeting, I'm even more confident than ever that you're the right guy for us".

"I don't think you come to IN if you don't want to live IN the neighborhood", Miller said when asked about high expectations. First, he has the commitments to compliance, wellness, and academics that we require at Indiana. A coach's son with the headiness and toughness to flourish as a 5'9 major college point guard, Archie is a proven leader, proven victor, proven recruiter, and a proven player developer with a defense-first mentality that will help us win championships. It was the kind of question Arch might bat round with his brother Sean, the coach at Arizona, and his father, John, one of the great high school coaches in Pennsylvania history. Dayton improved its defensive efficiency in each of Miller's first five seasons, peaking at No. 15 nationally during the 2015-16 campaign.

"I think coach Matta changed my complexion of what college basketball was all about", Miller said.

CNHI Sports Indiana's Terry Hutchens had a great story reflective of these forces Miller has to contend with in our Monday edition when he spoke with former Indiana player Ted Kitchel, who was instrumental in the Hoosiers' 1981 NCAA Championship. Sean, Archie and Lisa Miller all played Division I basketball. Past is prologue, the past represents pride in Indiana's case, but moving forward the only things that matter are the vision Miller projects for the program, how he can relate it to his players and whether it translates to wins on the court.

Prior to Dayton, Miller served as assistant coach at the University of Arizona, Ohio State University, Arizona State University, North Carolina University and Western Kentucky.

On the second point, how Miller relates to players, Glass took the initiative. Miller explains one of the reasons for taking the job at IN was because of the future talent available inside the state.

IN should be excited about what Miller will bring.

The names of those on Glass's short list are unknown.

Indiana University is hiring Dayton's Archie Miller as head coach. He was scooped up by new Thunder head coach Billy Donovan, whom he worked under at Florida between 1999-06.

"The state of IN in many ways is me", Coach Miller told the crowd at Assembly Hall. I love his teams' toughness and pit bull attitude.

"It's going to take time, " Miller said. I think our teams at Dayton were known for great ball movement, unselfishness.

He wants the Hoosiers to be aggressive on offense, nasty on defense and, of course, win the in-state recruiting battles.

Eleven years later, Kitchel is unhappy again. The 38-year-old native of Beaver Falls, Pa., comes to IU after spending the last six seasons at the University of Dayton where he compiled a record of 139-63 including a 68-34 mark in the Atlantic 10.

Kitchel doesn't believe anyone was.

"Our former players and our fans have to look at our program like it's being run at a high-class, high standard", he said.

"It was the only shot I had", Chiozza said.

As Sullivan states, "We will be sad to see him go". And that was a lie. Considering how poorly Alford was regarded out west roughly a year ago today, with fans starting petitions and flying planes over campus trying to get him canned, it's awesome he was even under consideration.

When Indiana fired men's basketball coach Tom Crean earlier this month, some observers wondered whether the Hoosiers would be able to find someone as qualified to replace him.

A news conference will be held today in Bloomington.
