Yahoo Decides To Shut Down Delicious Social Bookmarking Site

December 16th, 2010

Yahoo has reportedly decided to shut down their Delicious social bookmarking site, showcasing that the former search engine giant is coming on trying times.  Faced with stiff competition from Google and Bing, Yahoo has struggled to stay afloat during recent years.  They’ve tried to gain an edge in the internet marketplace through various purchases – the latest of which includes social content site Associated Content – but nothing has seemed to take the company to the next level.

Delicious, Yahoo Buzz, MyBlogLog, AltaVista, Yahoo Events, and Yahoo People Search are among the many things that are on the company’s sunset list.  It’s always sad to see a company cut back.

In addition, Yahoo is adding to the unemployment rate with a recent layoff of hundreds of workers.

Yahoo is also struggling in their efforts to compete with Google’s ad network.  Yahoo has not been able to gain an edge against Google in this respect.

If you are an avid social bookmarker, you can always use other services such as Digg and Stumbleupon to share your favorite articles online.

We will follow Yahoo and see what other measures they take in an effort to compete.
