New “Harry Potter” Film Gets $125M at Box Office

November 22nd, 2010

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 debuted this weekend, easily slipping into the Box Offices’ #1 slot.  According to early projections, the film is expected to earn about $125.1 million in North America.  The #2 slot at the Box Office is held by ‘Megamind’ with $16.1 million, followed by ‘Unstoppable’ with $13 million.

Harry Potter, like Twilight, has to ‘chunk down’ its final installment as it’s too involved to fit into a decent length film.  Some venture to say that the first of the last Harry Potter films actually stops when the action gets good – when Voldemort figures out his plan to rule the magic – and muggle – world.

According to Time, it’s the sixth best debut ever, and the midnight opening was the third biggest of all time – behind Eclipse and New Moon from the Twilight saga.  Most of the audience was under 24, meaning that on Friday there were likely tired kids at school and in college campuses across the country.

The final installment of the film – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is likely to be magical, and should shatter records amid its release.
