Indonesia Earthquake 2010 Casualties and 6.4 Quake UPDATE. The island community of Indonesia recently experienced a quake. Indonesia is joined by Japan, Turkey, Chile, Haiti, and the United States as countries that have experienced earthquakes.
The first major quake of the year was in Haiti. The quake killed thousands and devastated the island country. Months after the events unfolded, the country is still struggling to even take care of those displaced by the disaster.
The second major quake happened in the Latin American country of Chile. An 8.8 quake rattled Chile, and even gave birth to a tsunami in Hawaii. The tsunami didn’t do any damage and there were no casualties. However, the quake claimed the lives of thousands, displaced millions, and caused an estimated $8 billion in INSURED damages alone.
The earthquake is reported by some agencies to have been a 7.0 quake, but the USGS registered it at 6.4.
Luckily, the quake didn’t spawn a tsunami. In addition to the earthquake in Indonesia, there was a separate quake in Japan. Like the Indonesian earthquake, the Japanese quake wasn’t as devastating as the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes.
The earthquakes have had effects felt around the world. The earth was moved off her axis 3 inches, shortening our days. In addition, there are several aftershocks that aren’t widely broadcasts because they are low magnitude quakes.
Stay tuned for more 2010 earthquake updates.
