October 19th, 2010

Tylenol Recall 2010: yes, another Johnson & Johnson Tylenol recall is taking place, and again it’s because of foul odors permeating from various medications.  Since last year around this time, the company has been struggling with quality issues with several major recalls hitting the record.

In fact, Tylenol has also been accused of ‘buying back’ medication in order to avoid recalls.  Back in late September, the company’s CEO denied buying back large quantities of children’s and infant’s medication to avoid a recall:

This recall deals with Tylenol 8 hour caplets under the lot number BCM155, with a bar code of No. 3 0045-0297-51 8.  So far, this is a very small recall but is getting a significant amount of press simply because of the company’s history. Per the company’s official Web site, “McNeil is taking this action following a small number of complaints of a musty or moldy odor.  The uncharacteristic odor is thought to be caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called  2,4,6-tribromoanisole.  This voluntary action is being taken as a precaution and the risk of adverse medical events is remote.  To date, observed events reported to McNeil for this lot were temporary and non-serious.”
