Indonesia Earthquake 2010 a 6.4 Quake Rocks Indonesia.  Earthquakes are happening everywhere, and the country of Indonesia experienced a 6.4 earthquake today.  In addition to their event, Japan also incurred a 6.6 quake earlier in the day.

The quake happened off the coast of the Sumatra islands, and struck just before 8:00 am local time.  There has not been any reports of a tsunami from this quake, although the situation will be monitored throughout the day.

The earthquakes that have been unfolding are somewhat troublesome.  There have been quakes in Haiti, Chile, Hawaii, California, Oklahoma, Turkey, and Japan.  The earthquakes in Chile and Haiti did the most damage and had the most casualties.

The big concern over earthquakes on coastal areas is the creation of tsunamis.  The Chile earthquake spawned a tidal wave over 6,000 miles away in Hawaii, although the tsunami wasn’t as strong as feared and didn’t cause any structural damage or injuries.

Today’s Indonesian earthquake epicenter was 180miles southeast of Ternate, on Indonesia’s Moluccas island group, and 1,500 miles east of  the capital city of Jakarta.

Luckily, there are no immediate reports of damage and there also aren’t any immediate indication of injuries.  Hopefully this remains the case, as other countries such as Haiti and Chile have not been so lucky.

The recent earthquakes have affected the earth by moving it 3 inches off its axis and shortening our days. Scientists say that they don’t affect weather patterns because the earth’s tilt was not affected.
