Alice in Wonderland Review 2010 and Weekend Box Office Predictions

Alice in Wonderland Review 2010 and Weekend Box Office Predictions. Tim Burton’s 2010 re-make of Alice in Wonderland opened in theaters last weekend, zipping past Avatar’s $77 million domestic opening weekend with $116 million raked in domestically. The movie is now the record holder for the biggest 3D feature opening weekend ever.
While Avatar’s popularity grew each weekend – after all, opening weekend just so happened to be the same weekend as a massive snowstorm on the nation’s east coast – and the film went on to gross over a billion dollars worldwide - Alice in Wonderland is expected to slip.
Why? This weekend two movies will open: one stars Robert Pattinson, the other features Matt Damon. Not sure who Robert Pattinson is? He stars in Twilight alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.
Both Pattinson and Damon have enormous fan bases, and the New York Post reports that Tim Burton’s film is expected to slide this week at the box office. They also indicate that Pattinson’s movie is estimated to open with a $10 million weekend, meaning that perhaps the Twilight hype doesn’t follow its key actors around. (Next week Kristen Stewart’s new movie will debut, and this weekend should give us a little insight as to how that will turn out.)
Matt Damon’s “Green Zone” is estimated to bring in millions in the “High teens”, according to the NY Post. Alice is still expected to bring in between $40-52 million.
In a couple of weeks, DreamWork’s “How to Train Your Dragon”, another 3-D film is set to open. This will siphon some 3-D screens from Alice, so it’s crucial that Disney squeeze every drop out of the hype that they can.
Alice in Wonderland has been met with rave reviews from viewers on the streets, but sometimes lackluster reviews from the critics. Of course, what really matters is ultimately the box office totals.
