Toshiba Computer Recall 2010: Burn Hazard Brings Laptop Recall

September 5th, 2010

Toshiba Computer recall 2010 is a Satellite laptop recall caused by potential burn hazards.  Approximately 41,000 Toshiba laptops have been recalled from the US and Canada.  The recall is voluntary, after 129 reports from the US and 14 from Canada of overheating of the units.

The overheating can cause the area around the AC adapter to melt, which poses a fire and burn hazard.

Consumers can go to the Toshiba Web site, download a BIOS update and it will notify the consumer whether or not there is a burn hazard with their unit.  It will then display a message for the consumer to contact Toshiba for a free repair.

The units potentially affected are models Satellite T135, Satellite T135D, and Satellite ProT130 which retailed between $600 and $800 between August 2009 and August 2010.

It’s important to check your computer via the BIOS update here.  If you are indeed affected by the recall, contact Toshiba and do the repair – the burn risk and fire hazard just aren’t things to mess around with.

I have a qosmio g25 and last weekend I had a small fire caused by the power adapter. Luckily I am a fire chief and I caught it before it got started well. What I found was that where the cord going to the laptop left the adapter through the strain relief the cord melted down causing a small fire. It was not damaged in any way nor stretched or strained at any time. Apparently this is a problem caused at the factory when it was originally manufactured in that when the strain relief was applied or formed around the cable it damaged the internal cord causing insulation to be week. This will be reported via NIFRS for further investigation and I hope this will trigger a recall. It will be on record so that if this causes a catastrophic fire that is traced to the location of this type of laptop, then there will be a case for reciprocity against Toshiba.

It can start to burn when just sitting plugged in with no power draw. It also does not short the power adapter if caught quickly.
