Oval Office Makeover; Barack Obama New Office
September 2nd, 2010
Every president gets to make over the Oval Office, and Obama was no exception. Of course, every time Barack does anything, everyone in the blogosphere and world tends to learn about it. We didn’t see this kind of buzz when President Bush re-decorated the Oval Office, or when Clinton did, either.
However, Obama has brought a comfortable, live-in feel to his office. Gone are the cheesy hotel-lobby-ish colors that his predecessor left behind. Obama boasts a new leather chair, sturdier looking furniture, and more. As you can see in the photo below, the office looks somewhere you could settle in and really get some work done.
Perhaps the most blogged about piece of Obama’s new office is the rug he has on the floor. It’s got the quotes of famous Americans around it. It’s really a great piece. The Associated Press reports:
In the center is the presidential seal, and the quotes on its border include some of the most famous words ever spoken by Americans:
_ “GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE” — Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
_ “NO PROBLEM OF HUMAN DESTINY IS BEYOND HUMAN BEINGS” — John F. Kennedy.
_ “THE WELFARE OF EACH OF US IS DEPENDENT FUNDAMENTALLY ON THE WELFARE OF ALL OF US” — Teddy Roosevelt.
_ “THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF” — FDR’s inaugural speech.
_ “THE ARC OF THE MORAL UNIVERSE IS LONG, BUT IT BENDS TOWARD JUSTICE” — Obama’s favorite Martin Luther King quotation
The changes were made to Obama’s Oval Office when he and his family were vacationing at Martha’s Vineyard. Camel is THE color for fall, so naturally designers are drooling over the fabulous creation.
Here’s a photo of the president’s new office. What do you think? Cool, Chic, Bland, or Boring?

It looks comfortable; somewhere between a stoic presidential office and a family living room. I think it speaks volumes of the constant compromises he’s making.
Virtually every President since I can remember (and I remember back to Eisenhower) has had the American flag prominently displayed in both the Oval Office and behind him when he gives speeches or news conferences at the White House. Why doesn’t he?
I WISH IT WAS ALL BLUE ,CAN WE VOTE ON IT?, BLUE OR TAN.
I think it’s beautiful.
Serious, how much more can the O’bama’s denigrate the prestigious office the the United States Presidency!
The “pop” of contrasting color is Obama himself.
Unfortunately, it’s a bit bland and boring. It could have used a pop of contrasting color somewhere. And I think the wallpaper was a big mistake.
Lovely,……. With the subdued colors, when people fill the room it will show that they are the most important thing and not the “things” in the room.
