March 9th, 2010
Hawaii Earthquake a 4.4 Quake Shakes American Islands. Yesterday we reported on an earthquake in Turkey, and in the past couple of weeks we have reported on an earthquake in Chile, and another in Japan. There’s a whole lotta shakin going on in the world, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon.
Yesterday at about 6:29 PM local time, a quake situated 13 miles southwest of the census-designated place of Laupahoehoe, or 20 miles west-northwest of Hilo hit Hawaii. The movement was over 19 feet below the earth’s surface, making it a light earthquake.
Still yet, earthquakes are earthquake and they can be scary. Nothing is as devastating to infrastructure as this type of natural disaster. Luckily, there have been no casualties and no damage reported thus far from this earthquake.
About a week and a half ago, on February 27, a small tsunami hit the Hawaiian islands in the wake of the Chile earthquake. While there was no damage and no casualties reported, everyone was ready and braced for the worst. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
The effects of the earthquakes can be felt around the world. There is a lot of rebuilding that needs to be done. In addition, the earth was knocked 3 inches off her axis, which shortened our days by a small amount that we won’t even feel.
