Cruise Ship Hit by Rogue Wave a Mediterranean Nightmare
March 5th, 2010
Cruise Ship Hit by Rogue Wave a Mediterranean Nightmare. A Mediterranean cruise ship was recently hit by a rogue wave, causing two fatalities and around 14 injuries. The incident happened on the vessel named Louis Majesty as it was heading to Genoa. Those aboard were completing a 12 day cruise. After the incident with the wave, the boat headed back to Barcelona to remove the fatalities, treat the injured, and repair the ship. At this time, it sounds as if the cruise will go on after these issues have been tended to.
The rogue wave responsible for the damages and death is reported to be at or above 26 feet high (8 meters). It broke glass in the saloon where there were several aboard the ship eating and hanging out. The dead include a German and an Italian individual. The nationalities of those injured have not been revealed.
Nothing appears to be wrong with the cruise ship. However, the company will investigate and repair the damage done. It hasn’t been indicated whether or not this incident will create a need for ships to revamp their safety features. Perhaps some other material than glass would be better suited for areas that are susceptible to rogue waves.
Many aboard the ship at the time of the wave are traumatized. It is important to note that rogue waves are a freak incident and aren’t a common occurrence on cruises. If you are concerned, talk to your cruise line before booking your ticket.
