Chile Earthquake Earth Axis 2010 a Bizarre Drifting Phenomenon

March 3rd, 2010

Chile Earthquake Earth Axis 2010 a Bizarre Drifting Phenomenon.  We all know about the devastation that the earthquake in Chile caused, but the effects of the 8.8 shake of fury from mother nature will be felt all over the globe – literally.  This disaster caused the earth to shift three inches from her axis, which will shorten our day by a little over 1 microsecond.

Doesn’t sound that bad, but consider this: we have had two major earthquakes in less than two months. Scientists try to reassure us and let us know that the move won’t affect the seasons because it didn’t affect the tilt of the earth – but what if there is an earthquake that does?

Even though the earthquake caused the earth to move off her axis by 3 inches, ABC news reports that there are still things that you can do to protect yourself in the wake of a quake.  Most protection comes from building stronger buildings and making sure that infrastructure is secure.  However, these types of changes cost billions of dollars.  States like California may look into these types of projects – and Chile should have too.

The earthquake in Chile did more than just move the earth of its access.  It also destroyed hopes, dreams, and lives – and that’s something that can’t be rebuilt or replaced.
