GM Recall 2010: Are Any Cars a Quality Purchase? First Toyota Recalls Now This!

March 2nd, 2010

GM Recall 2010: Are Any Cars a Quality Purchase? First Toyota Recalls Now This!  Approximately 1.3 million vehicles from General Motors (or Governmental Motors) have been recalled due to power steering failures.  This news from Detroit comes to us at a time when the company could be picking up the shattered pieces of everyone’s lost faith in Japanese automaker Toyota.

The Toyota, GM, and Honda recalls all point to a scary question: are any vehicles really high-quality anymore? Remember the days when you could drive a car for 10 years with no problems other than minor repairs?  What’s causing all of this mess?

Toyota Prius Recall information can be found here.

Toyota Corolla Recall information can be found here.

Honda Fit Recall information can be found here.

Honda Airbag recall information can be found here.

Could it be general worker dissatisfaction?  GM workers and Toyota workers alike don’t feel secure in their jobs.  They know they could be told to leave at a moment’s notice, with little other than their union secured benefits (if they are union – many Toyota workers are not union and therefore have little protection) and a small unemployment check from the state. If the workers aren’t happy, will they really take the time to be proud of their work and make a quality product?

Could it be cost cutting measures? As earnings decrease, companies have to do more with less.  Instead of investing in quality supplies, are the automotive makers just getting by with what’s “good enough?”

Could it be corporate greed that is causing these recalls? Do executives know of some of the issues facing the customer, yet fail to do anything about them because of the cost involved?

One thing is for certain: the recalls are getting out of hand.  There are millions of affected vehicles on the road, and companies need to strive to improve their products.

The GM recall affects a few cars from the 2005-2006 Pontiac line.  Of course, we all know that Pontiac has been shut down, although GM is still servicing the vehicles and honoring warranties. The Pontiac vehicles affected include: 4s, G5s, and Pursuits.  The 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalts are also affected.
