Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico 2010 – 10 Day Ban (Fishing) and BP Class Action Suit. Okay folks, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico keeps getting worse, and now there is a 10 day ban on fishing instituted on Gulf waters. It would not be unreasonable to expect the ban to go on longer, as the oil slick is already three times larger than initially thought.
Fishermen, shrimpers, and oystermen have already lawyered up and filed a class action suit against BP and Transocean for their proposed negligence leading to this master disaster.
The fishing ban means that there won’t be any fresh fish or seafood harvested from the area, which is a horrible thing for both those in the industry and those who love to consume seafood.
The area is accountable for 1/3 of the nation’s oyster production and is a major producer of shrimp and other sea food. In addition, the Gulf waters are a stop for many migratory birds.
Government organizations are working to sample the water and the sea food in an effort to balance both health concerns and also economic concerns. Many families living in the area rely on the seafood industry to survive, and without it they have little or no experience in other professions.
Governmental organizations are working along with state and federal offices in order to declare disasters on the nation’s fisheries affected by the oil slick, as this will unlock millions of dollars of federal aid to fishermen in need.
Barack Obama has made it very clear that BP is responsible for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and will have to bear all the costs.
